Environmental Observations in Science Class

A young male student in a green hoodie is sitting at a desk, intently focused on the work in front of him, while other students are visible in the background.

Algonquin Middle School seventh graders in Mr. Yamane's science class spent time observing how different items grow and change in different environments.

The students were given five vials of unidentified liquids and instructions on how to mix their five containers or "environments."

They were asked to record their initial observations in their science journals, noting how the environments appeared and smelled and also predicting how the environment might change.

Ten minutes later they had to record their observations again and any changes that had occurred.

A final observation took place a week later.

The students had to handle the vials carefully so as to not disturb the life growing inside.

Each table was given a different set of environments so after their initial experiment was done, they rotated to the other vials and recorded those changes as well.

The students enjoyed observing the changes and sharing and comparing their notes with their fellow classmates.
