Celery Stalk Science Lesson

Algonquin Middle School students were treated to a science lesson using the five steps of the scientific method to learn how a plant "drinks" water.

The teachers first went over the different parts of celery stalk, as well as the five steps of the scientific method (ask a question, form a hypothesis, experiment, analyze data and draw a conclusion).

After collecting their supplies, the students used a magnifier to closely study the piece of celery and draw on their worksheets what they observed.

The students looked at the sides of the stalk, the bottom of the stalk and the leaves.

After measuring their piece of celery, they then cut the bottom of it off.

The students used their magnifier again to look at the part that was cut to see if it looked different, documenting any changes they observed on their worksheets.

The next step was to fill a beaker with water and then add food coloring to it.

They placed their celery stalk into the beaker of water and after a few minutes they used their magnifier to look at the part that was submerged to see if any changes had occurred.

The students continued to study their celery stalks daily, documenting their observations, analyzing their data and finally drawing a conclusion as to how plants "drink" water.
