Digestive and Muscular Demonstrations

Algonquin Middle School seventh graders in Mr. Kent Yamane's science class had fun observing and participating in demonstrations focusing on the human digestive and muscular systems.

After watching a short video about the human digestive system, including all of the stages of digestion and how the human body processes food, it was time to conduct a hands-on experiment.

Before the experiment began, a student volunteered to capture everything with his iPad, which was displayed on the classroom projector for the rest of the class to see.

The first student was given a banana to mash up in a bowl, simulating how teeth mash up food before it is swallowed.

More volunteers mashed up additional food to add to the bowl as Mr. Yamane added water to it.

The mashed food was then put in a blender. Mr. Yamane then put lime juice in the blender, simulating how the acid in our bodies helps break down the food we eat.

Once it was blended, the final part of the demonstration was to simulate how the processed food exits the human body.

Using a long sock, Mr. Yamane asked a student volunteer to squeeze the processed food back into the bowl.

After the demonstration was complete the students wrote down what they observed during the different digestive stages in their science journals.

The second demonstration focused on the human muscular system.

After watching another short video, Mr. Yamane used a chicken wing to teach the students about the muscular system.

He cut off the skin of the wing to reveal the muscles and tendons beneath it, showing them how they work together to make the wing move.

The students enjoyed observing, participating and learning about these two important systems of the human body.
