Garden Project Towers Over AMS!

A group of people, some with dark hair and others with lighter hair, are gathered together and appear to be engaged in a discussion or activity.

Algonquin Middle School Science Teachers Mrs. Cathy Wiemann and Mr. Kent Yamane, and STEP Teacher Ms. Madeline Rupick, introduced STEP (Structured Teaching Education Program) students to a tower garden project.

With the help of gardening expert Ms. Joan Olson, the students built two tower gardens.

These tower gardens are made from UV-stabilized, BPA-free, food-grade plastic and employs aeroponics, the process of growing plants in an air or mist environment without the use of soil.

Once the gardens are built, students will grow different kinds of lettuce and some micro greens, which are young seedlings of vegetables and herbs.

The teachers and students are hoping to harvest the vegetables and work with the district's new food service, Organic Life, to utilize the food in school lunches.

Wiemann said the students are excited about growing delicious produce this school year!
