Math Chicks Expo

Seven women with STEM careers visited with the students and shared their passion about math. 

Presenters included Laura Schillmoeller, a graduate of Chippewa Middle School and Maine West High School, who talked about her job as a market researcher and data analyzer. 

Heather Wahl and her intern Francesca, from Wahl Jewelers in Des Plaines, showed the girls how to measure diamonds. 

Social Scientist Altair Delao talked about how she uses standard deviation, mean, median and mode in her career to help nurses perform well in their jobs. 

Kody Smith, a software engineer, instructed the girls on how to create a website using tiles and percentages. 

Businesswoman Maria Rasmussen showed the girls how to run a family-owned window business. 

Deanna Kumanic, who teaches math and coaches the varsity girls' basketball team at Maine West High School also paid a visit. 

Finally, Rebecca Fisher, who teaches broadcasting and journalism at Maine West High School, showed the girls how to set up a camera and take pictures using the rule of thirds.  

Ms. Cathy Wiemann, 7th grade science and STEM teacher at Algonquin, said they are grateful to the inspiring and thoughtful Math Chicks Expo presenters. 

"The sixth grade girls learned so much from their math role models," Wiemann said.
