STEP Holiday Shop a Huge Success

The image shows a collection of colorful, hand-painted ceramic pieces, including small figurines and decorative plates, arranged on a white surface. In the background, there appears to be a cluttered workspace or studio environment.

This holiday season the Algonquin Middle School Structured Teaching Education Program (STEP) ran a holiday shop, selling items they crafted themselves.

SPED Teacher Ms. Madeline Rupick said, "We wanted to spread some holiday cheer while giving students a chance to showcase their creativity."

Students made gift bags, marble ornaments, snowman ornaments, bookmarks and canvases.

Rupick said each item was unique and fabulous and seeing the students work so hard and take pride in their creations was truly uplifting and a proud moment for everyone involved.

The students took on many roles to make the sale a success.

For example, they created a welcome sign, set up the classroom to make it festive and inviting, and made sure all of their crafts were ready on time.

During the sale, the students practiced their customer service skills by reading the menu, sharing prices, being cashiers and interacting with customers.

Throughout this process, the students practiced valuable life skills such as communication, responsibility and organization.

"They were so proud of their work and thrilled to see the support from the AMS community," Rupick said. "Seeing all the smiles and hearing the kind words from teachers and classmates made their hard work worthwhile. Many students are already asking to do it again!"
